Hope in Hemphill

Hope in Hemphill

(Performance time:  1 hour, 35 minutes)

The Cook family owns a dry goods store in Hemphill, Texas, and during World War II, they encounter hundreds of soldiers undergoing training in the nearby national forests.  The family seeks to “do its part” for the effort by supporting these soldiers in everyday ways.  The Cooks’ son also does his part by becoming a Marine and ultimately dying in the conflict.  The Marine tells of his struggles and exciting experiences in letters to the family, and these letters provide moving monologues.
